The Dangers of the “Quick Fix”
Many church leaders carry an enormous weight when it comes to decision-making. You don’t want to “miss” God’s will. You might even believe there’s a single, perfect blueprint for your church, and if you make the wrong move, you’ve ruined everything. You might even be reaching for a quick fix—a magic bullet—that will drastically change the trajectory of your congregation.
This kind of pressure is paralyzing.
I get it.
But it’s antithetical to how God operates.
The Problem: Fear of Making the Wrong Choice
Maybe you’ve felt this before:
What if we pick the wrong outreach strategy?
What if we hire the wrong person?
What if we start a new ministry, and it fails?
But here’s the truth: Churches that focus on incremental, faithful steps are healthier than those that try to predict every move.
Lifeway Research found that churches that take intentional steps toward mission—regardless of size—are more likely to experience growth and engagement (Lifeway, 2022). Rather than waiting for perfect clarity, they move forward with faithful obedience.
God’s Will is About Today, Not Just Tomorrow
Consider Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
A lamp doesn’t illuminate the entire journey—it gives just enough light for the next step. Yet, many of us refuse to move forward unless God shows us the entire blueprint.
Churches that grow consistently prioritize small, strategic steps rather than waiting for a perfect plan.
Two Practical Steps for Discernment
Seek wise counsel. Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” Don’t make major decisions in isolation.
Prioritize stillness. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” In a world of endless church growth strategies, discernment happens in silence and stillness.
